POSTCARDS THAT CATCH THE EYE
Once upon a time... on BidStart, I created a thread "Postcards That Catch The Eye" in the postcard category of the forums that invited people to share their favorite postcards from their collections or stock. A number of stamp folks participated then but now with HipStamp there may be fewer. Nonetheless, I hope some will stop by. But postcarders should have plenty of items to post here. Let the sharing begin & get this HP forum looking like it has some life to it!
Here's my first contribution. A linen postcard depicting the Southern Pacific's Daylight Express. (You may notice it as part of the banner for my HipPostcard store).

CES OUVRIER SONT CHARGES DU TRAVAIL DU FORAGE - SON TRAVAIL - Au Pays Noir Pour Les Victimes de Courrieres set - Tuck postcard
The Courrières mine disaster, Europe's worst mining accident, caused the death of 1,099 miners in Northern France on 10 March 1906. It is generally agreed that the majority of the deaths and destruction were caused by an explosion of coal dust which swept through the mine.
This very unusual perhaps unique postcard is made of wood bark. It looks handmade for the following reasons:
No printer or publisher name appears anywhere on either side.
The sender shows the mailing point as being "The Bush". (Is it possible that the sender worked at an isolated lumber camp or at a mine? The card was mailed to Cobalt, Ontario which is in the northern part of Ontario in heavily wooden areas and also where extensive mining was done.)
It is roughly and crudely made with rough uneven edges whereas most commercially made postcards would have some sort of finished look with smooth even edges. This looks like it could have literally been ripped off of a tree and made into an impromptu postcard on the spot by a hardy resourceful person working in an isolated heavily wooded area that did not have easy access to regular paper postcards.
The postcard is dated in 1909. Affixed to it is a Canadian 2-cents King Edward VII definitive stamp issued in 1903.
This is the other side of the postcard shown in the previous post. I was so thrilled when I stumbled across this unusual card recently.
One type of postcard I love getting my hands on is where the postcard and the stamp used on it share the same topic, as is the case here, both showing British King Edward VII.
Here is flip side of the above mentioned postcard where both the card and the stamp feature British King Edward VII.
I was attracted to this postcard for 2 reasons. For one thing, I actually lived in that village for 1 year in 1996. For decades before that and in the years since then I also travel through there a number of times each year. It is a beautiful village that is a border village in 2 senses of the word, being bordered by Lake Champlain and the State of Vermont on the east and by the Canadian border on the north. The second reason is the selection of the cars shown from the 1940s and I love transportation themed cards.

Really thrilled to finally have gotten my first ever leather postcard from the early 1900's.

I am starting to see more and more of this type of interesting novelty, i.e. a beer coaster that doubles as a postcard. That way you can use the coaster to put your glass or bottle of beer while you are drinking and then you can affix postage and mail it to somebody you may think would enjoy the same brew. I have this postcard currently listed at HipPostcard:

This is the message / address side of the above mentioned coaster doubling as a postcard.
In addition to this new Irish coaster postcard I also have a Swiss one for another beer brand on sale here too.
