In May, 1866, when the Confederate Veterans were must ered out at Richmond, Virginia, Major A. L. Jones, a Miss issippian, was among them. When asked by Miss Anna Rush, a young lady from the North, to autograph the back of a Confederate Bill for her as a souvenir, Major Jones accepted the Confederate Bill. He handed it back to her, with the following poem inscribed thereon:
"Representing nothing in God's earth now, And naught on the waters below it; As a Nation's pledge that's passed away, Keep it, dear friend, and show it. Show it to those who will lend an air To the tale that this paper can tell, Of liberty horn of the patriots' heart, Too poor to possess the precious ore, But too much of a stranger to borrow, We issued today our promise to pay. And hoped to repay on the morrow. We knew if it brought us our bread today. Twas the best our poor country could do. Keep it, it tells all our history o'er From the birth of its dream till the last: Modest and born of the Angel hope, Of a storm-cradled nation that fell. Like our hope of success, it passed."
