A modern postcard of Abner Doubleday (1819-1893) as a Union general in the Civil War. It is from a c.1865 photograph by Mathew Brady.
Doubleday fired the first shot in defense of Fort Sumter and had a pivotal role in the early fighting at the Battle of Gettysburg. After the war, he obtained a patent on the cable car railway in San Francisco that still runs there. In his final years in New Jersey, he was a prominent member and later president of the Theosophical Society. There is no evidence that he invented baseball.
This postcard was published in the 1990s. It is about 4 x 6 inches (10x15cm) size. It is unused and in Mint condition.
