"On July 2nd, 1863, the troops of Hoke's Brigade, N.C. Infantry and Hays's Brigade, Louisiana Infantry (Louisiana Tigers) Charged East Cemetery Hill and after severe fighting they scaled the hill, planted their colors on the lunnettes and captured several guns, but assailed by fresh forces, and having no supports, were compelled to relinquish what they had gained and withdraw."
