A vintage chrome postcard published by Koppel Color Cards of Hawthorne, NJ, probably in the 1960s.
The iconic smiley face was created by commercial artist Harvey R. Ball in 1963 for an advertising campaign by The State Mutual Life Assurance Company of Worcester, Massachusetts. Ball never copyrighted or trademarked the symbol, so it is in the public domain, and it has been reused and modified by countless artists over the years.
The graphic was popularized starting in September 1970 by brothers Bernard and Murray Spain of Philadelphia, who printed it on buttons, t-shirts, bumper stickers, coffee mugs, and many other novelty items, along with phrase “Have a happy day” which later mutated into “Have a nice day.” By 1972, 50 million smiley face buttons had been produced.
Size: 3½ x 5½ inches
Condition: unused with no writing, small light bend, lightly toned on back, VG+
