Item Description

This illustrated American Flag Patriotic Cover was mailed from Hempstead, Long Island, New York to New York, N.Y. in 1917 franked by a horizontal booklet pair of one-cent George Washington issues tied by a Station-1 duplex with a barred elliptical killer.

Verso of the envelope is imprinted: "National / War Work Council / Army and Navy / Young Men's Christian Association / "With The Colors."' Also verso in pencil manuscript is the AEF soldier's name and "Machine Gun Co. 165 U.S. Infantry."

The soldier wrote a note on a military themed postcard which he enclosed that he prefaced with in pencil: "This is what we will write" that reads: "A letter from you / with good news and cheer / Makes Duty seem lighter / and home-coming near." Proof that this PPC was indeed the enclosure is that the cds of the duplex caused a matching 'embossing' to the postcard. Corners of the postcard are nice and sharp. Message verso is in pencil.

Roughly torn open, verso of the envelope is missing a section and has a tear across the flap and one extending to bottom from the missing section (see scans). No backstamps.
