Madame cayat de castella aviation parachute death postcard (c. 1914) madame cayat de castella aviation parachute death postcard (c. 1914) click images to enlarge description very attractive and historic postcard showing madame cayat de castella (her real name was lucienne blaise)'l'effroyable plongeon mortel - la premiere femme du monde qui s'elanca d'un aeroplane a 1,000 metres de hauteur' translated as the dreadful deadly plunge - the first woman in the world to leap from an airplane 1,000 meters high. Scarce card! Unsent, divided back with tape repaired edge tear at top, some corner bumping/wear & toning. Fair-fine condition. According to wikipedia: (more at site) lucienne cayat de castella is a french parachutist , who died on july 26 , 1914at the hippodrome de stockel (near brussels ) during a flight demonstration (not parachute to deploy, while its previous attempt to nevers was perfectly place on 17 may ) [ 1 ] .She was the first woman to parachute from a plane in 1913 [ 2 ] , at only 22 years old, with the american giorgia "tiny" broadwick (1893-1978) during the same year , testing one of the specimens. Made by her husband georges cayat, attached by three leather straps under the tail of her rob, the parachute being fixed under a wing and connected by another harness to her armpits, with the hands surrounded by rags so as not to be injured by the cables she was clinging to. Her husband, inventor of an opening system assisted by compressed air, detached it at an altitude of 800 meters, while his face was barely 50 centimeters from the propeller [ 3 ] base shipping is $2.00 domestic and $3.00 international.
