Globe Hotel. Southeast corner of N. Cass Street and E. Wisconsin Avenue. Built in 1889 by the Schlitz Brewing Co. Around 1960, the Globe was purchased by the Juneau Square Corp. It was later razed to make room for the present Juneau Square North Building. Picture from PHOTO COLLECTION Milwaukee County Historical Society. The Globe Hotel was the oldest hotel on Wisconsin Ave? The Globe Hotel appeared on the Milwaukee sky line at Wisconsin Ave and Cass St the same year as the present North Western Road Depot a block away (1889). Built by the Schlitz Brewery on land once owned by Pierre Juneau, the 57 room hotel cost $86,000 and was a favorite stopping place for visiting dignitaries. Such importatant personages as Senator Robert M. LaFollette, William Jennings Bryan, Roald Amundsen and Harry Houdini would walk from the depot to the hotel, the bar of which was one of the best known in the Gay 90's. The brewery owned the Globe for 50 years and then sold it to the owner of the adjacent Juneau Hotel. The hotel's former operator, Ben Scherer, purchased it in 1945 and sold it two years later to the George Hamlins. Four years ago the Globe was purchased by the Juneau Square Corp. to be razed, along with the Juneau Hotel, to make room for the Juneau Square North Building, and the distinction of being the oldest hotel on Wisconsin Ave passed to the Pfister Hotel.
