New Zealand 1899 Flag Barr Fyke Machine Stamp 2x Wellington Postmark

z30 These two antique covers came with extensive album notes about the Barr Fyke franking machine being introducted in Wellington in August 1899 which the slogan used sixteen vertical lines - this was an electric drive machine capable of handling the 600 letters a minute in the 1800s - it was used indiscriminately in back stamping or cancelling. (there is some damage to cover as image will show graded fair) (the flag cover is great condition..... history follows)...

The flag slogan (the second souvenir) was when it was decided to replace the other with one more indicitative of New Zealand - the Dept of Lands and Survey prepared a drawing showing the flag with the letters NZ placed imbetween stars of the Southern Cross - this was engraved by H Turnbull Hickson and Palmer of Wellington. This is lightly aged but great condition
