History on the Postcard-The residence at 361 Maple Avenue in Elmira, New York, is a distinguished Queen Anne-style mansion constructed in 1892 for lumber baron Justus H. Harris. Designed by the architectural firm Pierce & Bickford, the house is notable for its intricate design and historical significance. In 1983, Elaine and Tony DiBiase transformed this historic home into The Christmas House, a seasonal shop specializing in holiday decorations. Initially occupying three rooms, the store expanded over time, becoming a cherished local attraction. In 1993, Julie and Mark Delgrosso acquired The Christmas House, continuing its legacy until its closure in 2022. The mansion's distinctive exterior features 16 different colors, earning it recognition as a "painted lady" and inclusion in the book "America’s Painted Ladies." In May 2024, a historic carriage house on the property was destroyed by fire, marking a significant loss to the estate's historical structures.
