A modern postcard of Handsome Dick Manitoba of the Dictators, and his girlfriend at the time, in front of CBGB's in New York City in 1976. Manitoba found a wallet outside CBGB's that belonged to the photographer Godlis. Manitoba returned it to Godlis and Godlis asked if he could take their picture, and this is the result.
Dick Manitoba was lead singer of the proto-punk New York City band, The Dictators for 30 years. Since February 2005, he has been singing lead with The MC5, a Detroit pre-punk rock & roll band. Manitoba also has his own show, "The Handsome Dick Manitoba Program" on Little Steven Van Zandt's Underground Garage channel on Sirius Satellite Radio. Manitoba's, a New York City rock n' roll bar on 99 Avenue B (between 6th & 7th St), NYC, was opened by Manitoba on January 14, 1999.
Godlis, like Weegee, is a legendary photographer strongly associated with New York City and especially the early NYC punk scene. Best known for his gritty, film-noiresque iconic black & white images of The Dictators, The Ramones, Patti Smith, and other original instigators of punk rock, his street photography is equally amazing and in the same class as the work of any of the other great master photographers. He is still active and has a website and a blog.
This postcard was published in Switzerland in the 2000s. It is about 4 x 6 inches (10x15cm) size. It is unused and in Mint condition.
