A vintage postcard art card portland head light lighthouse maine 1787 us history.
"in 1787, when maine was still part of massachusetts, john hancock, the governor of massachusetts, authorized the building of the portland head lighthouse. However, the lighthouse remained unfinished until 1789 when the united states government took control of all lighthouses as one of the first acts of congress. At the urging of alexander hamilton, secretary of the treasury, funds were appropriated to complete the construction. The portland head lighthouse was first lit on january 10, 1791. In the distance, one can see ram island ledge light, two lights, halfway rock light, and spring point ledge light. Henry wadsworth longfellow, inspired by these magnificent views, wrote his famous poem "the lighthouse." the famous marine artist, winslow homer, used the many spectacular scenes in his paintings. It measures 6" by 4".
